Growing a Flower

•April 2, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Billions and billions of different things are going to happen to you during your life. Some things happen seemingly randomly. Yet there are some things that require the growth of a plant.

Plants grow from a seed. Without a seed, there is nothing to grow from. After the planting of a seed, the right amount of water, nutrients, air pressure, climate, sunlight etc. are required for it to grow. Some plants grow quickly. However, some must be nourished with care and take a long time to grow.

In life, there are things that, without a “seed”,  there is no starting point. Like a plant, some events and relationships build up and grow before turning into a full flower. Sometimes there will be the right amount of water and sunlight and you’ll be able to get a promotion at work! Other times the growing plant will whither and die.

It’s important to understand that sometimes things just don’t work out. But don’t worry, there will be other times when that seed will grow into a beautiful flower, and everything will be alright!

Which Do You Eat First?

•February 1, 2011 • Leave a Comment

There’s one thing that I’ve noticed about my eating habits over the years. If it’s just a normal home meal, I tend to eat all the rice first before moving on to the other accompanying dishes. Why do I do this? Well to me, it seems logical to finish the most plain part of the meal (the rice) first before moving on to more delicious things. So, I quickly gobble down that rice with a few pieces of meat/veggies and then have a bowl full of other things. Yet, that is just me. Some people eat very differently. Some people like to slowly claw away at their rice along with accompanying dishes until they finish both at pretty much the same time. Others like to eat all the accompanying food first before finally getting to their rice. Everyone is different.

However today, I will turn food-eating into a completely different concept. Perhaps the way you eat reflects the way you deal with (or would like to deal) with life. For me, I could relate eating all the plain rice first as getting through all the hard and unfavorable tasks in life first before basking in the easy/pleasant tasks. Others may prefer to finish easy tasks first before moving on to harder ones. Perhaps eating rice and accompanying food at the same time could represent a person trying to keep the status quo; a person who does not like drastic change or drama.

When I think about it, I don’t always do the hard things first. Sometimes I dread the harder tasks and start with the easy ones. So, there is no single way to categorize a person. However, the deeper question remains, what kind of person are you normally?

Which would you eat first? The rice, or the food?

The Art of Good Speaking Pt. 1

•January 29, 2011 • Leave a Comment

There is indeed an art to making good presentations and being a good public speaker. Yet at the same time, it is one of the hardest (and sometimes scariest) things that anyone could possibly do. However, I strongly believe that in order to convince people of anything, you need to be able to speak well and articulately. Let me ask you this: how many times have you been in a boring presentation? How many times have you seen a presentation stretch on for ever and ever and ever? How many times have you wished a speaker was not monotone? I can tell you, I have been in all those situations. People have probably thought that about some of my presentations as well. That being said, I can tell you it’s not a pleasant experience at all for anybody.

Being able to create unique, interesting, and engaging presentations should be a key skill that I believe anyone should strive for. It makes getting your points across much easier. If you have the attention of your audience, then it is more likely that that they will listen to what you have to say all the way through. It is absolutely disastrous when people start sleeping through your presentation.

So how might you improve your presentation skills? More on that next time. Just keep this in mind for now..

Life is Just a Very Long Road

•January 13, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Here’s another life metaphor that I thought up randomly at 2 am in the morning…

If you think about it, life is just a very long road. In fact, everything you do, every step you take, everything you decide to eat, every mistake you make, every friend you make, every decision…is just another path in this long road called life. Some of these may be short roads, some might be long ones.

But, rest assured that life is a very long road, and along the way, you’ll come to many forks in the road. You’ll be able to take a different path, even if you made a mistake in the past.

The Web of Friendship

•December 28, 2010 • Leave a Comment

One day, I randomly thought of a cheesy simile for friendship. To me personally, friendship is like a web. It starts off small, but sooner or later, it’ll explode and expand into a huge network/web of friendship!  ”Threads” are constantly spun between people; between you and your friends, between your friends and your parents, between you and your friends’ friends, etc. It’s an ever growing web of connections. And it’s also an emotional web as well. Haven’t you ever felt that “bond” with your friends; haven’t you ever felt how close you are to them? I have. Take for example a friend of mine whom I have no classes with this year; however we’re still great friends bound by a common interest in karate.

So yeah, that’s pretty much it. Keep spinning that web!

Losing Your Senses

You’ve probably seen the question, or maybe even have had it asked to you once or twice…that is…the question “If you had to lose your sense of hearing or your sense of sight, which one would it be?”

I’ve…never had an answer for that, and still don’t. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately and this just came up…why exactly is the answer so hard to give?

For me, if I were to lose my hearing: I wouldn’t be able to hear myself, I wouldn’t be able to listen to music, I wouldn’t be able to hear the wonderful laughter of my friends, I wouldn’t be able to hear words of kindness, words of encouragement, words of sadness. To lose all that, I don’t know if I could live. I respect those with hearing disabilities, it’s beyond me how they cope.

For me, if I were to lose my sight: I wouldn’t be able to see snow, trees, leaves, or any other kind of scenery. I wouldn’t be able to see the sunlight shining bright through the windows. I wouldn’t be able to read books, I wouldn’t be able to read messages my friends would send me, I wouldn’t be able to read cards. Perhaps most importantly, I wouldn’t be able to see the faces of my family, friends, loved ones.

So really either way, there are just so many drawbacks, I don’t know which one I’d rather lose. So maybe there’s a lesson in that itself. Take care of yourself, so that you can prevent such great loss. And never, ever, take anything you have for granted.

That’s all for now, and merry christmas eve to you all.

Life Won’t Ever Be Fair

•December 4, 2010 • Leave a Comment

I’ve been thinking about the statement “life isn’t fair” lately. People use it a lot. I use it sometimes. And I was thinking….would it be possible to have a completely fair world? I think that both in reality AND in theory, it is impossible to have a completely fair world. It would not be possible to accommodate everyone’s different viewpoints, opinions, and the definition of “fair” itself. If an entirely fair world were to be suddenly created, it would probably cause so many disruptions in the hyperspace nebula that the world would gravitate into the sun!

There are so many things that we cannot control…so the best we can do is just battle on.
